The Blocks Go Back Like a Puzzle

Every block fits precisely into the oak tray — arches nest into arches, triangles into corners, cylinders into circles. Packing up becomes its own game. Children who can build a tower at 18 months are solving the tray puzzle by age 3.

The Essential Companion

The Montessori Playmat

In Montessori education, the work mat defines the child’s workspace — a bounded area that fosters focus, independence, and respect for materials. Children carry their chosen activity to it, work, and return everything when finished. This is the Montessori work cycle.

Our playmat brings this principle home. It creates a "prepared environment" - a core Montessori concept - wherever your child chooses to learn. On the kitchen table, the living room floor, or at a grandparent’s house.

  • Defines a focused workspace for independent learning
  • Protects surfaces and keeps pieces contained
  • Rolls up for easy storage and travel

Beautiful. Inspirational. Satisfying.

These are really beautiful blocks. As soon as they arrived I just had to tip them out, feel them, and then build something! Even re-arranging them back in their box was satisfying.

Building bricks were my favourite toy as a child. I’ve brought these for my one year old nephew. I hope they will inspire him as my old bricks inspired me.

I came across Oak and Sprout on Facebook. I’m extremely cautious about any business that advertises on Facebook, but independent research into the company from multiple sources gave me the confidence to go ahead and purchase. Customer service was excellent. They do care. They will deliver, even if circumstances beyond their control delay things.

The bricks are quite small, so maybe check the size of them before ordering? Small but beautifully formed. Perfect for small (and adult!) hands.

Beautiful heritage toy.

I loved the blocks. The parents love them. The recipient is not quite one yet and received it as a christening present, with strict instructions it was definitely to be played with !

Gateway to the imagination

We love our building blocks - we have made houses, factories, a forest, a fairy garden and old mother Hubbard's shoe house to name a few with them. I love that I can leave my 4 year old with them and she can be absorbed making towers for a long time while I get on with other things in the house, but then also just as happy to muck in with me as we make up a story to go along with what we're creating.

Lovely box of pieces.

Don't know about the child. Yet. It's a long story and it's early days.
My initial reaction is wow, how very lovely, what excuses can I make to handle it myself (I'm 81 years young). This comes after some impatience with the length of time it took you to produce the goods; a grumpy thought along the lines of "oh, another internet business whose advertising is wa-ay ahead of their production ability". All is forgiven.
A great 'toy' is timeless and I suspect this box of blocks may be in that category. Time WILL tell.
I have withheld one star simply because the eventual recipient has not yet received the item. I will willingly edit the review when the verdict becomes apparent.

Beautifully made. I bought it for my Grandaughter's 5th BIrthday present. I wanted to give her the opportunity of exploring the interaction of shapes, patterns and colours. Also to appreciate the value of 'undoing and putting back together'.

Looking for open play look no further

The Oak & Sprout bricks were bought for my first grandson as an heirloom gift. He’s currently only 12 weeks old so as yet he’s unaware of the joy they will bring him. Though his Mummy is certainly enjoying them.
The quality of the pieces is exceptional and the craftsmanship superb. Even down to the beautiful dovetail joints on the oak tray. They are extremely tactile and the different woods just add to the charm.
I was contacted by Oak & Sprout advising me that there would be a slight delay in delivery’s, not just by email but a phone call too. Once I advised that my grandson was only a few weeks old there was no rush. When hearing this I was offered an engraving option. I jumped at the chance especially as I had purchased them for my grandson to treasure and hopefully pass on to future generations. Whilst some might think they are expensive I totally disagree they are more than worth the money, especially when you think of the price of some plastic toys that are only going to end up in landfill within a few years.
I have told all my friends about this wonderful company, and would recommend to any parent, godparent, grandparent in fact to anyone that is looking to buy a gift that is going to give hours of open play.
Oak & Sprouts customer service is beyond first rate, advising right the way through the time line of your purchase.
All this and you get to support a UK small business.
I can guarantee my grandsons bricks will not be my only purchase from Oak & Sprout.
We are expecting twin grandchildren in a few weeks, so as soon as the arrive I will be placing another order for two setts, just waiting on names so I can take up their wonderful engraving service.
Do not hesitate just order even if it may take a few weeks for delivery, I assure you they are more than worth the wait.

I found Oak & Sprout via Facebook where I saw the exotic hardwood building blocks. I was very impressed by the business ethos and contacted Jennifer to ask if it was possible to personalise the item for me as I needed it for a special gift. The customer service is outstanding and everything I asked for was duly delivered. I was moved to tears by the quality and workmanship and I am sure it will be treasured by generations to come.

I loved the look of the geometric bricks

I loved the look of the geometric wooden bricks it was reviewed by an architect as a beautiful product . It had recommendations from Montessori being child friendly as they sourced woods from sustainable countries and the dyes were non toxic. The order was badly delayed and I wondered if it had been a scam GLADLY It is so carefully crafted by hand which is a slow process and BELIEVE ME It was WELl WORTH the wait and I will back for more Just order early as they are so popular by discerning customers and cannot recommend Highly Enough Jenniver responded to all my emails with care and attention and most of all Delivered a beautiful gift .

The Philosophy

No Instructions Required.

Building blocks are the oldest toy in the world for a reason. No batteries, no screens, no rules. Stack them, line them up, build a wall, knock it down. These are the moments where engineering starts — where a two-year-old learns that three blocks on top of each other is a tower, and a tower can fall.

What makes these blocks different is what they’re made from. Four exotic hardwoods — oak, purpleheart, padauk, and zebrano — each with its own weight, colour, and grain. Children sort by colour before they know what sorting means. They feel the difference between the dense purpleheart and the lighter oak. They’re learning with their hands.

The Woods

Four Hardwoods. Naturally Colourful.

Every block is cut from one of four exotic hardwoods — chosen for its colour, grain, and feel. No dyes, no stains. Every colour is the natural wood.

Oak
Oak
The storage tray and building blocks. A strong, honey-toned European hardwood with a distinctive open grain. The foundation of the set.
Purpleheart
Purpleheart
A vivid, natural purple that deepens with age. One of the most striking woods on earth — dense, smooth, and satisfying to stack.
Padauk
Padauk
A vibrant orange-red African hardwood that mellows to a warm burgundy over time. Bold and instantly recognisable in the stack.
Zebrano
Zebrano
Dramatic dark stripes on a warm golden background. Every block has its own unique pattern — children love finding the differences.
